Vaginal Rejuvenation: Laser, Fillers & Surgery

Vaginal rejuvenation treatments vary based on vaginal laxity, muscle support, and individual symptoms.

Learn how laser treatments, fillers, and surgery differ.

When people hear the term "vaginal rejuvenation," they often think of surgery designed to tighten the vaginal canal.

However, patients who visit an OB-GYN clinic for vaginal rejuvenation consultations often have a wide range of concerns.

Some notice a feeling of looseness during intercourse or changes in vaginal tightness after childbirth.

Others experience discomfort in daily life, such as water leaking from the vagina after bathing or soaking in a tub.

Vaginal rejuvenation is therefore not simply about narrowing the vaginal canal.

It is important to evaluate the vaginal anatomy, function, and symptoms together.

Today, based on the clinical experience of four female OB-GYN specialists at DAUM Women's Clinic in Gangnam,

we will explain the different types of vaginal rejuvenation, how treatment options are selected, and what to expect during recovery.

1. When Should Vaginal Rejuvenation Be Considered?

Many patients who visit our clinic do not initially ask for vaginal rejuvenation surgery.

Instead, they describe changes or discomfort they have been experiencing.

Common concerns include:

  • A feeling of vaginal looseness during sexual intercourse
  • Changes in sensation or tightness during intercourse
  • Vaginal or vaginal opening laxity after childbirth
  • Water leaking from the vagina after bathing
  • Pain during intercourse associated with vaginal dryness

In particular, pain caused by vaginal dryness may have a different underlying cause than vaginal laxity.

Therefore, it is important to evaluate the vaginal mucosa and identify the cause of discomfort before considering treatment.

The reasons for these symptoms may also vary depending on childbirth history, age, and the condition of the pelvic floor muscles.

2. Why Is Vaginal Pressure Testing Important Before Treatment?

Before planning vaginal rejuvenation treatment, it is important to objectively assess the current condition of the vaginal canal.

At DAUM Women's Clinic, we use a vaginal pressure measurement device called the VVP-3500 to evaluate vaginal pressure and vaginal volume.

These measurements help assess the degree of vaginal laxity and provide useful information when considering treatment options.

In addition, we may assess the partner's penile girth when relevant and perform a speculum examination

and pelvic examination to evaluate the vaginal mucosa, internal anatomy, and degree of muscular relaxation.

These findings are considered together to determine an appropriate treatment approach for each patient.

3. Nonsurgical Vaginal Rejuvenation: What Is the Difference Between Laser and Radiofrequency Treatments?

Patients who are concerned about undergoing surgery may first consider nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments.

Common options include procedures using laser energy, radiofrequency (RF), and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).

Although these treatments are sometimes collectively referred to as "vaginal laser treatments," they do not all work in the same way.

They differ in the type of energy used, the depth of energy delivery, and their intended treatment targets.

For example, available technologies include:

Laser-based treatments: MonaLisa Touch

Radiofrequency (RF) treatments: CoAtherm, WINBACK, Revive, and Viveve

Focused ultrasound treatments: Vaginal HIFU (sometimes referred to as Vaginal Ultherapy or Vaginal Ulthera)

Each device delivers energy differently and targets different tissue depths.

Therefore, the thickness and condition of the vaginal mucosa, as well as the degree of vaginal laxity,

should be assessed before selecting a treatment.

The clinical evidence and safety profiles of these treatments also vary by device and indication, so their potential benefits and limitations should be discussed with a qualified specialist.

4. When Can Vaginal Fillers Be Considered?

Vaginal fillers are one of the nonsurgical options used to restore or supplement volume within the vaginal canal. While laser and radiofrequency treatments use energy-based technology, vaginal fillers work by directly adding volume to the treated areas.

1) Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

HA Cushion Injection uses a high-purity, high-density hyaluronic acid formulation intended for vaginal use.

It is designed to provide cushioning and supplement the thickness and volume of the vaginal wall.

2) Wonderfill (Love Call Injection)

Wonderfill is another vaginal filler option.

It uses human-derived dermal collagen material and is intended to support collagen formation while creating soft,

natural-feeling volume along the vaginal wall.

3) Winkfill Hera (Point Injection)

Winkfill Hera is presented as a longer-lasting filler option.

It is a dextran-based filler designed to stimulate collagen synthesis and provide longer-lasting volume through tissue integration.

The actual duration of filler effects varies depending on the product and individual response.

5. Who May Be a Candidate for Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery?

Surgical vaginal rejuvenation may be considered when the vaginal canal is significantly relaxed

or when the surrounding muscles and ligaments have lost substantial support.

In particular, women who have experienced vaginal childbirth may develop changes in vaginal anatomy as the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding ligaments stretch during delivery. Even after postpartum recovery, these tissues may not completely return to their pre-pregnancy condition.

Additionally, as women age, the pelvic floor muscles and supporting tissues may gradually weaken,

potentially increasing the risk of conditions such as uterine prolapse, in which the uterus descends from its normal position.

Some women also experience discomfort after an episiotomy or vaginal delivery due to widening of the vaginal opening or damage to the perineal tissues. If the distance between the vaginal opening and the anus becomes shorter, or if changes in the perineal anatomy cause hygiene-related discomfort, perineoplasty may also be considered.

An important principle of vaginal rejuvenation surgery is that treatment should not focus solely on narrowing the vaginal opening.

Instead, the vaginal muscle layers and surrounding supporting tissues should also be considered when planning surgical correction.

Excessive tightening of the vaginal opening may actually increase pain during sexual intercourse.

For this reason, surgical planning should consider not only the current degree of laxity but also potential changes associated with aging and menopause.

Furthermore, vaginal rejuvenation is not simply about making the vaginal canal narrower.

The vaginal mucosa is not a flat, smooth surface. It naturally contains folds and ridges.

If these natural structures are not considered and the vaginal canal is tightened excessively,

patients may experience discomfort or reduced satisfaction after surgery.

Therefore, Vaginal Mucosal Fold Reconstruction, also referred to as vaginal mucosal ridge reconstruction,

is a surgical approach that aims to preserve the natural folds and contours of the vaginal mucosa while correcting areas that require treatment.

The goal is to maintain as much of the natural mucosal structure and elasticity as possible.

Ultimately, successful surgical planning involves more than determining how much to tighten the vaginal canal.

It requires a comprehensive assessment of each patient's vaginal anatomy, muscles, ligaments, and mucosal condition to determine the appropriate extent of correction.

Recovery After Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Because vaginal rejuvenation surgery involves surgical correction of tissues, recovery generally takes longer than with nonsurgical procedures.

The initial recovery period is usually around 1–2 weeks, while sexual intercourse may be considered approximately 6–8 weeks after surgery.

However, recovery varies from person to person, and patients should consult their surgeon to determine when it is safe to resume sexual activity.

Every woman has different reasons for considering vaginal rejuvenation.

Some are concerned about changes in vaginal anatomy following childbirth,

while others notice differences in sensation during intercourse or experience discomfort in daily life.

[At DAUM Women's Clinic],

we take the time to understand each patient's concerns and evaluate the current condition of the vaginal canal

through vaginal pressure testing and pelvic examinations.

Based on the condition of the vaginal mucosa, muscles, and degree of laxity,

our specialists discuss appropriate treatment options tailored to individual needs.

Vaginal rejuvenation should not simply focus on tightening the vaginal canal.

What matters most is understanding the underlying cause of discomfort and carefully considering the patient's anatomy and function.

If you are experiencing discomfort related to changes in vaginal anatomy,

we recommend consulting a qualified OB-GYN specialist to evaluate your condition and discuss suitable treatment options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. When can I resume sexual intercourse after vaginal filler injections?

A. It is generally recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for at least one week after vaginal filler injections.

Follow your treating physician's specific instructions.

Q2. How long do vaginal fillers last?

A. The duration varies depending on the type of filler used and how quickly the body absorbs the material.

Some patients consider repeat treatment after approximately 1–2 years, while others return for a consultation after around six months.

These intervals reflect individual treatment experiences and do not guarantee how long the effects will last.

Q3. How long is recovery after vaginal rejuvenation surgery, and when can I resume sexual intercourse?

A. The initial recovery period is usually around 1–2 weeks, and sexual intercourse may be considered approximately 6–8 weeks after surgery.
