Can Genital Warts (Condyloma) Occur Inside the Vagina?
Today, we would like to introduce the case of a woman
in her 30s who visited our clinic with the concern:
"I can feel something on my vulva, and it feels slightly itchy.
Could it be some kind of lump or boil?“
During examination, multiple wart-like lesions were
identified on the vulva, showing findings
consistent with Genital Warts (Condyloma).
Genital Warts (Condyloma) are associated with
infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
and are among the most common conditions
that can be transmitted through sexual contact.
When a more thorough examination was performed,
we found that the lesions were not limited to the vulva.
Multiple lesions were present along the vaginal walls,
and some had extended toward the area surrounding the cervix.
Many patients assume that treating
only the visible warts is sufficient.
However, it is not uncommon for genital warts
to be more extensive inside the vagina or a
round the cervix than on the external genital area.
Treatment depends on the size, number, and extent of the lesions.
When lesions are small and limited in number,
topical treatments such as Aldara® (Imiquimod)
or Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) may be considered.
However, in cases like this one, where
the lesions are larger and involve multiple areas,
laser ablation may provide a more effective treatment option.
When Genital Warts (Condyloma) are diagnosed,
it is also important for sexual partners
to be evaluated for possible lesions.
Evaluation and treatment of both partners may
help reduce the risk of recurrence.
Early diagnosis and treatment can help
minimize the extent of treatment required
and reduce the overall burden of management.
If you notice small bumps, wart-like growths,
itching, irritation, or a persistent foreign-body
sensation in the vulvar area, we encourage
you to seek evaluation from a gynecologic specialist.
[ A Note from Director Kim Min-kyoung ] Anyone can feel concerned when they notice a new change in the vulvar area. Because Genital Warts (Condyloma) can be an embarrassing condition to discuss, many patients delay seeking medical care.
However, lesions may sometimes be more extensive internally than they appear externally, which is why a thorough examination is so important. If you notice any unusual changes, do not hesitate to seek professional evaluation. At Gangnam DAUM Women’s Clinic, we are committed to providing compassionate care and support every step of the way. ^^ |
